praise indeed.  I get letters from most of my pupils & with very few exceptions they are doing splendidly. It is very very cheering for me because I really do think that I have been getting results on these machines that are as good as any other squadron that has them in England. It is amazing to hear them even now spoken of with awe by men from other squadrons when our chaps simply treat them as a matter of course.

I wrote to that lad Wilkinson who was with darling old Roger and I got an answer yesterday. I know you will be awfully glad to read this letter as I was. For fear of losing it I will copy it out in this letter and send the original later. Here is the letter.

France
18/8/17.

Dear Capt Hughes,

Your letter of the 13th just revived sad memories. Although we had only known your late brother for a very short period he had endeared himself to us bearers by his kindly actions and thoughts for our welfare.

As you know the late Capt Hughes was stationed as M.O. at "Bull Trench" about a quarter of a mile off the village of Flers. The conditions were most trying – the rain and mud making our work very trying, still we never came back from carrying a patient to the next station without getting some hot drinks from the late Capt.
