in time for Riverview Academics on 5th Decr.

John Mullins has worked out a very elaborate design for the Lane-Mullins Prize bookplate. It is really very handsome, but heraldic as was to be expected, and Mother & I had to get as many miles away from the design as we could, in order not to be copying it. I shall give you a very crude idea of the two bookplates: –

[See image for sketch of the Lane-Mullins Prize bookplate with the wording "Lane-Mullins Prize, Founded by Brendan Lane Mullins, 2nd Lieut. R.F.A., Killed in action at Arras, France, 14 June 1917.  Awarded to ..." Also see image for the Roger Forrest Hughes Prize bookplate with the wording, "Qui procul hinc ante diem perlit.  Sed miles sed pro patria. St. Ignatius College, Riverview, Roger Forrest Hughes Prize for Classics, Awarded to ... "]

The medallion on the second plate is to contain a vignette of Roger copied from the small head on the memorial card. I am afraid I have done much injustice to both designs. J.L.M's is really very well drawn, which is more than anyone can say for my libel on it. At the same time I think it is a little too full of detail.
