He refused to have Davis, a flight commander that the Colonel offered him in my place and who had only flown a few hours on RE80. The Colonel however was absolutely determined and talked a lot of rubbish about wanting my "personality" in the other squadron. The C.O. told the Colonel that if his squadron was broken up like this he would simply have to apply to go back to his regiment. He is a very senior regular captain in the Indian Cavalry so the only result of his doing so would be that the R.F.C. would lose a very good squadron commander. If the Colonel was going to take me away at the moment when the adjutant had gone and the C.O. was going away for a fortnight the squadron would go to pieces and it would be impossible to carry on. Eventually the Colonel saw the force of the argument and agreed that I would not have to go for a fortnight at least and promised to find a really good flight commander to take my place. So the C.O. went away on the Sunday and I had at least a fortnights grace, so we believed.

On the following Thursday – four days later – the wing adjutant rang up to say that Capt Davis would
