never troubled with too many scruples, has boldly flung his pledge to the winds, & spoke with Hughes at the meeting last night. I understand some of his Ministers won't follow him in this.
Meagher's egotistical speech opening the meeting last night will amuse you. Like many others he will support conscription but will not help to win it. The fact is that he has been coquetting with the Labour Party in the City Council in the hope of getting enough support to be again elected Lord Mayor, & now he is spilt again by the Conscription issue being raised again.
Of course a great many other people than Labourites went to the poll on 28th Octr. 1916 & silently voted No. I suppose they will do so again.
We are all delighted to have Eileen & Peter back at home. He is so much bigger, & fatter, & brighter than when he left us three months ago, & all the Maher family are his most devoted admirers.
Should this reach you for Christmas, we send you heaps of love & every sort of good wish. I think I told you to draw on your letter of credit for a tenner, & buy yourself something for Christmas & consider it comes from us. God bless you & keep you safe.
Your loving father
Thomas Hughes.
