end I spent there. I was able to make some small return for all their kindness when I had 3 days leave last week. Margaret Vidal who is working in London came & stayed at Porchester Terrace with us and, though she had to be at work all day, was able to join us when we went out to dinner & the theatre in the evenings. Old Gilbert was on his leave so we really had a wild & woolly few days. It was grand to have another bit of leave with them all.
I was also able to see Maurice who is looking splendid. He is in a lovely hospital in Regents Park. Poor old boy, he has had a rotten time but really he is doing awfully well. He was'nt very well on Sunday as his wound became a bit inflamed & they fished out another bit of his trousers, but it was nothing serious. I'm afraid his leg will be about an inch & a half shorter than the other & he will always be lame, but really it is wonderful that they saved his leg. He is awfully good about it, poor old boy, but I'm afraid his football days are ended. It is such a blessing to be alive at all these days that things like this which once seemed so very sad, are now rather a relief when they mean that one at least of our dear ones will be out of the fighting.
We really had a most cheery few days together and had great luck in striking three excellent shows at the theatres. "Dear Brutus" by J.M. Barrie was a particularly nice and charming play & Gerald du Maurier in the leading part was of course excellent.
