as a flying man & a teacher, and if you feel blue about the monotony of it all occasionally, cheer yourself up with the thought that the two people who love you best in the world thank Heaven that you are anywhere in the wide earth except in the firing line. I don't want to make you feel a squib, because I know that you will go cheerfully wherever you are sent.
Yesterday we went to Riverview for a Requiem for the boys who have fallen. It was all very nice, & very touching. Young Fr. Paddy Dalton sang High Mass, & Chaplain Captain Tighe S.J. preached. He mentioned no names, but when he said Riverview had cause to be proud of her sons at the Front, he mentioned different incidents concerning different boys, & amongst those which were plainly recognised by us was the story of dear Roger refusing aid until his stretcher-bearer was first attended to.
We saw Fr. Gartlan & Fr. Sullivan (Prefect of Studies) about the Roger Forrest Hughes Prizes for this year. Fr. Sullivan wants them as prizes for Classics in the two or three top classes, & we agreed, as Classics were Roger's favourite study. This also influenced Fr. Sullivan in suggesting it. So I paid Fr. Gartlan the £10 for the first year , & said I would arrange for a yearly payment of the same sum in future. Then we set to work to design a book plate, and I went to Sydney Ure Smith who did a very good one for Brendan's Memorial Prize for English, and I am promised a sketch soon. The plate is to be finished
