3.

was with me for a time at Oxford last year. You will remember that I went to meals with him & his wife often in the little place they had near the aerodrome. He is an awfully nice chap. Since I last saw him he has been to France & was wounded and is now not flying but is a major on the staff of group headquarters and is in charge of all instruction in the group. So he is a very useful friend to have at Hq. He was so glad to see me for he had heard I was killed!! I took him to lunch after I had reported at the group, and we had a great yarn. He told me that the squadron stationed at Witney were utterly "dud" & badly in need of someone keen to set the pace there.

When I went back to report at the group I was posted to No 8 T.S. at Witney!! I went out there by car & reported – it is about twelve miles from Oxford. I found that there was practically no accomodation there & had to find a billet for myself in the town. Eventually I got a very nice room at the house of some old people called Tarrant. They are just an old man and his wife and awfully decent old things.
