Therefore I wanted ours to be broader in treatment, and simpler in design, and as his was gothic, we made ours classic in detail, especially as the prizes are for the Classics.
The design itself I frankly cribbed from a memorial card of Kitchener, designed by Frank Brangwyn R.A., & published by Raphael Tuck, except as to the medallion on top which is a variant of my own. The scratches down the sides are supposed to represent bay leaves or laurel leaves, and the Latin lines have always appealed to me, though God knows I never thought of applying them to one of my own sons. I think they give point to the portrait, without the necessity for setting out Roger's military rank, & particulars of his heroic end. "Who, far from here, fell before his time, but a soldier, & for his country!" What nobler epitaph could be written of a man?

The flying excursion of Gus James, Minister for Public Instruction, from Sydney to Melbourne was as ignominious a venture as Galloway's from Melbourne to Sydney. There was just one post on earth, & Stutt hit it, & James finished his journey to Melbourne by train! Stutt ended by getting there in his machine as soon as James in the train. Australia is, I fear, several years behind the times in flying at any rate.
