My dear Geoffrey

I am writing this in the office under difficulties, & with constant interruptions. Today I have had my scant office time encroached on by no less than two conscription meetings, one at 11.15 am for the Finance Committee of which I have been elected a member, & the other for general organising for the coming struggle – W.M. Hughes in the chair at both. He is very much in earnest this time, as he has been forced to stake the existence of his Government on the result!

On Friday last I presided in the Town Hall at an immense meeting which was addressed by Sir William Irvine, who doesn't see eye to eye with W.M. Hughes, and who has virtually pushed Hughes over the brink, & has forced him to some decisive action.

On the following Monday Hughes made an address to his electors of Bendigo, & announced that his government would stand or fall by the result, a statement he repeated at an enormous meeting at our Town Hall last night. I was at it, & by great good luck I got a seat immediately next Hughes, so I had a good opportunity
