My own darling Mother & Father,
Since my last letter we have had an almost unbroken run of very "dud" weather so there is not much news to tell. We have only done two patrols and neither have brought me any very stirring experiences. The first was on Sunday last and the squadron did well again as the "bag" was 3 Huns destroyed & 4 out of control & we had no losses. The C.O. told me that my flight had done most of the fighting so far & he wanted the others to do a bit, so he put us up on top of the formation to guard the others while they did the scrapping. Consequently they had all the fun that time. Towards the end of the patrol there was some confusion among the others & most of them went home early. I stayed on with my lot & had a bit of bad luck as I saw two Hun 2-seaters and chased them about 10 miles behind their lines. I just got a good burst of fire into one when I got a bad jamb with my gun & while I was clearing it they got away. Then I saw 10 Hun scouts climbing up at us and drew them back to within a few miles of our lines hoping to pick up some more of our machines to help us deal with
