Garlick, the Under Secretary of the Local Government Department has been writing to me to ask if I will confer on the subject of being reinstated on the adjoining land if it becomes necessary to cut right through our house in order to make the road the same width up to the corner. I then saw Garland, who told me positively that the Government would not resume us under any circumstances, & that they left that to the Woollahra Council (which has no money for the purpose.)

Therefore I propose to see Garlick as he asks, but to put a bold face on things, & to positively decline to be reinstated next door, & to vow that if they attempt to interfere with me I shall fight to the death. No new house & grounds could compensate us for the loss of our home where our boys have grown upĀ
