expressed the hope to Joynton Smith (the new Lord Mayor) that he might enjoy the privilege of his intimate friendship! He has also been making similar speeches to other people, & no doubt in a short time he will learn more sense. He has also announced that when in residence in Moss Vale he intends to read the lessons in the Church of England every Sunday. So you see he is courting popularity on lines which certainly his predecessor Strickland carefully avoided.
By the way I got a letter from Sir Gerald the other day dated from the Wellington Club, London, & he said in it that he had gone to London to offer his services to the Government for any war work they liked to put him at, but that they said he was "too senior", & that consequently he proposed to return to Villa Bologna at Malta, where Lady Edeline & the girls are.
Mother & I are still living at Manly where we have had the pleasure of the company of not only John Meagher, but, for a few days, of Mick Meagher, & (last & not least) Tighe Ryan!
