they are IA, IB,& 2. The highest pass is a IA & only about 2% ever get that. Those who do are made Wing Examining Officers & have a machine of their own & spend their time testing instructors & pupils in the Wing to which they are attached. Those passed IB are classed as fit to instruct on the most advanced types of machines, & those classed 2 are fit for instructing on clumsier machines. Williams told me that though my flying & instruction were above IB category, he could not recommend me for a IA as it was essential that a pilot had flown single seater scout machines before he could be classed IA. So I was barred by the fact that I had'nt flown a scout at any time. However he said he would class me IB with an added report that given a chance to fly scouts I would be an excellent Wing Examining officer. I was very pleased for after all I had passed as high as I could & had done the fortnights course in six days.
