yesterday I am O.C. No 8 T.S! Of course I am only an acting O.C. and still a flight commander. So here I am in my first attempt to run a squadron and an awful job it is. It is a nice little outfit to take over a squadron so hopelessly inefficient that the O.C. has been sacked!  You simply cannot picture the confusion and inefficiency and added to that I have half the men & my two best instructors – one of whom in my only flight commander – all laid up with this epidemic of influenza! The task was one to appall the most experienced of squadron commanders, and I can tell you it appalled poor little inexperienced me!! I could not see where to start and yesterday I was almost in despair. The inefficiency is something awful. I have spent the last two days in the office from 9 am till 10 at night toiling and struggling to find out how many pupils there are and what they are doing. It really is the limit. I realise that it is a great chance for me but it is a chance.

I know that I must make mistakes through sheer inexperience and I know that if I fail in this I am going to be simply thrown out like my predecessor. It is the hardest and worst job I've ever had but I can only do my best and if I fail it will simply be because I'm not up to it. I quite realise the possibility of failure but
