them for a final two days leave. It was such luck I arrived for otherwise I would have missed seeing the dear old chap. We all had tea at the Trocadero. I had to go off to dinner with Major & Mrs Smith who took me to a theatre after. It was so nice to see him again – he was on leave. He was very decent indeed. He told me that my old 'B' Flight was still the best in the squadron by far, which is pleasant news. Also he told me that the General came the day after I left the squadron & asked him if he had recommended me for promotion. Major Smith told him he had & the General said that he would recommend me for a squadron in Egypt, as that ought to suit me. However that has'nt come off but at least it is good to know that I was actually recommended from France.
On Sunday after mass I said good bye to the family as I had to catch the train at 11.40 back to Witney. I am so sorry that dear old Bryan has to go back to France again but he is awfully cheery about it. Really he is such a grand manly old chap. I feel very much for poor Aunty Mary having this fresh anxiety after all she has gone through as the guardian of all us boys over here. She has been so very brave about it all.
