My dear Geoffrey

My last letter to you was just a few lines on 1st or 2nd February. My previous letter was on 28th January.

Since then we have got your first cablegram from France "Well. Love. Geoffrey Hughes" which was dated 1st February and reached us on the 4th. Our last cable to you was sent on 2nd – "Repeat letters between 22nd and 26th. Probably on Audania. Much love. Well. Hughes."

The reason of this was that news has been published here that the Audania a Cunard liner, with English mails for Australia, posted between those dates, had been sunk off Ireland, & we thought it almost certain that your last letter from England, before you crossed over, would have been on board her.

Mother got a long letter from Mary Strickland the other day. Sir Gerald has gone to England, but all the rest of them appeared to be settled at the Villa
