refuse me a few days now.

I flew over to Oxford yesterday evening for dinner with my old pals and went to the theatre with them after. It was a very cheery evening. The C.O. and all of them were awfully glad to see me and I was able to assure them that for efficiency there is no comparison between this squadron and the old one. When I told him about the state of things here the C.O. said "Well, Sammy, I believe the Colonel meant what he said when he told me that he wanted you more at Rendcomb than here."

This morning I went to High Mass at Oxford and flew back here after lunch. This is our fortnightly Sunday holiday, so that is how I managed to get to Oxford. I thought I would have a forced landing on the way back, as my engine started to run very badly and it was only by the most delicate coaxing that I got it to hold out over the last 15 miles. I'll have a few words to say to my flight-sergeant about it tomorrow.

I opened my campaign of reform the day after my last letter by sending for the flight-sergeant and telling him exactly what I
