& wanted to see the C.O. & Capt. Hughes, I naturally thought it was to make enquiries about the accident at the boar hunt. The Colonel came & sent for me. I was nearly surprised out of my life when the first thing he said was "Hughes, you are to go back to England." He said that orders had come from England as my people had agitated for my return, and though General Salmond had opposed it very strongly, I had to go. The Colonel was very upset about it but was quite decent, and so was the C.O. It was an awful surprise to me for though I knew Aunty had been trying to do it I did not think that at such a critical time there would be a single chance, for good pilots are all wanted.

I was not allowed to go on any shows during the next three days before I left but I could not bear to stand & watch the others going off, so Claye & I spent our time patrolling along the lines in the hope of catching an odd Hun, but no luck.
