Poor old things, they had their three sons all killed in the same week and are very sad. I do so feel for them. They cannot feed me so I arranged to get my meals at the local hotel. Unfortunately the aerodrome is about two miles out of the town so the fact of having to walk down & back for every meal was rather distressing!! I found that the description of the squadron given by my friend Minchin was hardly bad enough, and I felt frightfully fed up at the prospect of the same old battle all over again. The C.O. Major Clarke seemed very decent but he had only been with the squadron a week or so & was in despair about it! The output of pilots had been practically nil for the last month. The machines are Bristols & DH6's. The latter are rotten old things really & the idea of coming back to training on them made me very fed up. I found that I had only two serviceable machines in my flight! The mechanics are lazy and hopelessly slack & generally everything seems to be as thoroughly inefficient as
