My own darling Mother & Father,
To day I got your dear cable wishing me a happy birthday and I must write to tell you how I am thinking of you so much, and though so far apart I feel that really we will be very near to one another in our thoughts tomorrow. Please God it may be the last birthday away from our own dear home!
Tomorrow will surely be the busiest birthday I've spent away for I can see an unusually heavy day's work ahead in the office. Never mind, it will perhaps be in some remote way bringing a little nearer that wonderful day when we shall all be so happy together again, for I suppose every little bit of hard work helps to end the war!
Yesterday the cake arrived safely – thank you ever so much. It was splendidly timed! We will eat it in mess tomorrow night.
