I sighted a formation of about fourteen Huns & decided to go for them. They were Triplanes & Albatross & were below us so I lead off by diving on the leader. I was followed by the only member of "B" Flight with me & another pilot but the others kept circling round above & did'nt come down! That made things rather awkward for I had hardly opened fire on the leading Triplane when I found I had three more on my tail firing at me! I tried to shake them off & Claye fired at one & it fell very suddenly but things were far too exciting to worry about whether he crashed! It was one less on our tail, but there were still two more of the ugly little brutes under fifty yards away & firing like mad at us. Then Claye had to put on a fresh ammunition drum which was very awkward under the circumstances & I found it quite impossible to shake off the two triplanes.  There was a nasty bang in Claye's cockpit & a beastly smell of phosphorus so there was nothing for it and I put my nose down & engine full on & dived (as only a Bristol will dive) at about 200 mph for our lines. Having arrived safely on our side I took a glance round the machine & found that
