During the week end I met a lad I taught to fly last March. He was always one of our star pupils and we expected great things of him. His name is Campbell – he is half French and about 32 years old. Imagine my joy at meeting him in London on leave after eight weeks in France, wearing a Military Cross with a bar & already a flight commander!

He is the most phenomenal man I've ever heard of. He has only been in France for eight weeks & has already destroyed fourteen German machines and five Kite balloons!!! I have in my album a snapshot he gave me of himself just before he left us last March. It bears this somewhat quaint inscription, "To my friend and damned good instructor Hughes from W.C. Campbell." I am rather proud of that photo these days! He is staying in Oxford at present & we have seen quite a lot of him.
