called "Sardines" because as soon as you find the person who is hiding you have to hide in the same place yourself and the last one left is the "sardine" next time. Eventually you get about a dozen people crammed into a hiding place that is about big enough for one! We played "Up Jenkins" and all the other mad old games and altogether had a thoroughly cheery and bright evening, dancing whenever we felt inclined. It was just like one of the old carpet hops we used to have at home. We were just a wild crowd of irresponsible youngsters & all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Of course there were some awfully nice girls there – real cheery good sorts. It was the first really cheery and bright old evening party I've had since our great little "hops" at home and I can tell you I did enjoy it. It was Miss Vidal's birthday party and it certainly was great fun.

Then on Sunday the Vidals asked me to lunch and I had a very nice time too, just a very quiet party this time. They are awfully nice people and make you feel quite at home. Mr Vidal is the Church of England rector at Barnsley which is a tiny village near here. He is a funny old bird but quite a decent sort. Mrs Vidal is one of the very best. She simply loves to have lots of young people about the place and is full of fun. It is the fun of the world to hear her bossing the old man about. The daughter is an excellent sport and is going to London next
