My dear Geoffrey
I am writing this at the table in the House while a debate is going on concerning the question of compulsory retirement of all our judges at the age of seventy years. I have spoken against it myself so that I am more or less bound in courtesy to remain while other members speak. Professor Peden is talking away on the opposite side of the table, so that it is a little hard to keep my attention on this letter.
A couple of days ago we went down (that is, the Members of the Legislative Council) to present the usual address of welcome to the new Governor. He seems a decent sort of person but rather stodgy. He is rather fond of making long winded speeches, – a habit the N.S.W. public & press will probably endeavour to cure him. He also began by paying somewhat fulsome compliments.
