6.

happy Christmas – just as happy as it can be these terrible days. It is useless to try and send presents these days of submarines but I wish Daddy would buy something for Mother, Eileen, & Peter, & some chocolates or something for the Mullins girls from me, and send me an account.

I have just arranged to have a present made for Daddy by one of my men. I will keep it until it is safe to send it. It is to be a little war trophy for you – a tobacco jar made from the boss of an aeroplane propellor. As you know, our propellors are made of about eight laminations of wood and the effect when nicely polished is very good. This will be made from an old prop off my favourite machine here; the tips of the blades were broken by another pilot. The round boss with the blades sawn off and then hollowed out makes a very effective looking tobacco jar. Some day before the war ends I am going to have a walking stick made for Daddy from an old propellor blade.

I must say good night now, it is very foggy & cold, but one can never trust this weather, & it may be fine in the morning. Tons of love to you Eileen, Peter & all. God ever bless & keep you my own dearest old Mummy & Daddy.

Your ever loving son
Geoffrey
