you are instructing and so give him both verbal & actual instruction all the time. Really modern instruction is wonderful – I often wonder how we learnt to fly in the early days!
The machines at Gosport are the old Avros that frightened me so much when I was learning. Now they have a much more reliable engine in them. You remember how I crashed on an Avro when my engine failed when I was at Northolt. They are most gorgeous machines for instruction as they are very sensitive and safe. Naturally I was rather awkward on them at first as it was two years since I'd flown them, but I soon got the feel of the machine. The course was to have lasted a fortnight, but after six days Williams my instructor said that he wanted me to go up with another instructor for my final test, as they had taught me all there was to learn! So on Sunday I went up and passed the test & then went off on leave. Williams said that my flying was first class. There are three classes of passes at Gosport and
