My dear brave Geoffrey
I can't tell you how proud we are of our boy for winning the Military Cross so soon. God bless you & keep you safe that you may wear it for many many years. You know everybody felt you simply must get it, & everybody, in speaking to us since they have got the news, says "I knew Geoffrey would get it, & I wasn't a bit surprised!" All the same your mother & father know what dangers you have had to pass through, & we know also that the last thing that ever entered your mind was to go "pot hunting", & that is why you got it.
You know we often felt that in wishing you kept in England we might be prejudicing your career, & I often wondered if we were doing right, but you can understand how we longed to keep you out of danger. Yet on the other hand we felt we might expose you to the taunt that so many other fellows deserve – that they are carefully keeping out of danger while better men than they are taking all the risks.
