arrive at Oxford next day when I would immediately proceed to Rendcomb!! Pethybridge who was acting C.O. protested that the Colonel had promised the C.O. that I would not have to go for a fortnight, and also told him that Davis was utterly incapable of carrying on my work. The only answer he got was a rather severe snub. We were simply furious as you may well imagine and utterly taken aback by this latest move. It seemed hopeless and there was nothing to be done, for the C.O. being away left us helpless. However a chance of retaliation came within the next hour and I took it. I was sitting talking to the adjutant when the wing rangĀ him up and asked if we could possibly have another pilot graduated on RE80 by the following Saturday. He put down the receiver and asked me if it could be done. I saw my chance and took it. I said "Tell the wing that it is utterly impossible unless Captain Hughes stays till the end of the week." TheĀ wing adjutant repeated my reply word for word and the wing adjutant at the other end of the telephone promptly exploded and said that he would report it to the Colonel, who came to the telephone himself.
