My dear Geoffrey
Your Mummy has been writing you letters nearly every day this week. Yesterday a mail went by a transport, but that won't reach you for months. The day before Mother vowed there was a mail, and I swore there wasn't, so she wrote and I didn't. Nothing of any great importance has happened here in the last few days. We got the news yesterday from Holly of Cicely's engagement to Austin Curtin, so we sent him a cable of congratulation today. I shall write a note to Cicely after I have finished this to you. The news of the War is not too glorious, as the collapse of Russia overshadows everything, even Cadorna's great victory over the Austrians.
News has come today that the German fleet is making its way up the Baltic in search of the Russian fleet. There can be only one result when they meet. All this wretched business is prolonging the war and causing the Allies needless sacrifice. In many ways it is one of our darkest hours, but I never despair of final victory though God knows we long for you to be back to us again.
We hear from the Mullinses that they have got a most beautiful letter from you the other day about poor Brendan, & they are greatly
