In the evening I took Aunty, the girls and Margaret Vidal to dinner at the "Florence" and then to see "The 13th Chair", which was a real thriller. Mrs Patrick Campbell was simply splendid as a clever old French woman, who was a fake medium.
On Thursday morning I experienced my first air raid in London. Mary woke me at 5 a.m. saying that there was a raid on. We all went downstairs. We could hear the guns but they were not very near, so I went out on the porch to have a look at the fun. There was'nt much to see except a few search lights and shell bursts. I nearly froze stiff so went back to bed. Later on the guns sounded nearer so we watched the shells bursting from my window. We couldn't hear any bombs bursting and the raid really never came near us. We all went to bed again before the firing stopped and the next thing I heard was the bugles blowing the "all clear" through the streets. Taking it all round my first air raid was a very tame affair. I was quite surprised to read later that there had been 23 Gothas over, five or six of which got through to London. Incidentally two of them were brought down & the crews captured. The casualties were very light. Well at any rate I have seen another side of this wierd war now.
