me of a smart & witty retort by Peter Meagher to his father old John Meagher in my presence a few days ago. You know of course that in spite of John Meagher's denunciations of the "gentlemen Catholics" he still thinks that one of them is the best man to look after his temporal affairs, however bad his guiding might be in spiritual ones. So the other day I had John Meagher & four of his sons in my room at the office in close conference about their affairs. When we were going through some more or less intricate financial matters, one of the sons said, "This is not fair to Sir Thomas. We should not be asking him to work these figures out for us. We should have brought them properly worked out."
John Meagher answered "Don't worry about Sir Thomas. I can ask a Hughes anything I like!" "Yes" retorted Peter Meagher like a flash "And call him anything you like, also!"
The boys in the outer room wondered what on earth the yells of laughter were about, and I enjoyed the joke much better than John Meagher, I think.
They consecrated a bishop at St. Mary's a Sunday or two ago, & had John Meagher, John Mullins, & the rest of them in the sanctuary, & to the luncheon in St Mary's Hall afterwards. I was not invited to
