9.

I stayed the night with the Vidals. Next morning Segrave came at 8.30 to pick me up as I had promised to drive his car back from the station to the Park, where he leaves it. We drove to Cirencester & he caught the 9 train back to Rugby. I started to drive his blessed car back & ran out of petrol on the way! I did curse him for not having filled it up! I had to walk about 4 miles back to the Rectory to breakfast!! After breakfast I went to the Park & got a tin of petrol which we took out to the car & I drove it to the Park & left it there & came up to the aerodrome by sidecar. To finish up my strenuous Christmas I went to a dance at Vidals last night. So altogether I had a very strenuous but quite cheery Christmas after all.

(Continued once more on 28th.)

Almost from the moment I arrived at Lilbourne I feared that I would be sent to this squadron. While at Rendcomb on the way up I heard that 62 Squadron was mobilising and that they could not get flight commanders. I scented danger as we were going to be in the same Group at Lilbourne & the flight commanders would have to be found in the Group.

I had not been at Lilbourne more than two hours when an urgent message came from the Wing to know when I had returned from overseas & whether I was medically fit for general service.
