My own darling Mother & Father,

I have your dear old letters of July 4th, 11th & 13th and am very very glad to get them. Thank you very much for the two pairs of socks which will be very nice now that the cold weather is beginning. I have a very good supply of socks and some of those I had when I left home are still going strong. They are the greatest comfort in cold weather as cold feet – either actual or metaphorical – are fatal.

I am sure you are all very pleased to know of Cicely's engagement to Austin Curtin. I am very delighted at the news. Austie is a magnificent fellow and I think a very great deal of him. He is a splendid type of Australian and a real good R.C. which is the great thing. I think they are both very very lucky and I am sure they will be very happy. Cicely is a dear old thing and I am very very fond of her. She and Mary have been real sisters to me over here. Austie has gone back to France. They will be
