gun mounting gone I decided to make for home and so turned west but none of my formation followed. We were about fifteen miles from our lines and as soon as we became isolated three more Huns came after us!! They were a little below us & had to point their noses up to fire.
I had a most interesting time with them for they took it in turns to have a go at us but by very careful manoeuvering I managed to spoil their aim altogether! As each one got into position to fire I turned & made him fire as I flew across his nose – which is always a difficult shot. They followed us all the way but I had them beaten badly for they only put two holes in the planes and they must have fired over a thousand rounds at us. It really was most interesting and I never for a moment thought they would get us but just watched them like a cat and managed to forestall them at every attempt.
