we have been starting work – only patrols on our side of the lines so far. On Sunday morning I went up to test my gun & fired it off into Hunland from a great height. I was just coming home when I saw a Hun about 500 feet above me flying towards his own lines. I was then at 16000 feet and went after him. I caught him up and got into perfect position under his tail & opened fire at 150 yards range. My gun fired a short burst & stopped – all my ammunition was gone!! The Hun did just what I was waiting for, for he dived away from me, but it was useless to follow as we were already over the lines & I could do nothing without ammunition! So I had to leave him though I would surely have shot him down if only
