not get near him so I had to give it up & dive for the lines which I crossed at 3000 feet. There we had blessed peace & Claye fixed his gun while I climbed up to 8000 feet. Then we went back to the scene of the fight but could find no trace of the battle. So I came back and circled round trying to pick up the remnants of my formation but not one could I find. Feeling utterly broken hearted over the whole show I flew home & landed on the aerodrome. There I found one other machine was back and thought I had lost all the rest. I felt like crying as I told the C.O. the story and how one fool had forced us to attack when I had already done
