strike form till the last day (yesterday) when I really played quite well for me, We used to have wild bets on the matches and I lost many sixpences to Bryan who was too good for me even at my best! Sometimes Aunty Mary used to bring tea up to the links & we had a great old party after our game & then played a few more holes, other times we went rowing up the river to some tiny village where we could get a lovely "un-rationed" tea – Devonshire cream and all! On one famous occasion, we three boys hired a sailing boat & sailed miles up the river & had tea – but we had to row nearly all the way back as the wind was dead against us & the old tub would not sail reasonably close to the wind. Another day we hired a pony, "jingle" and went to some small village for tea.
