My dear Friend

My many thanks for your long and interesting letter [indecipherable].  This will be I fear not a very shabby return.  Let me in the first place express very great joy to hear of the improvement in dear Elizabeth's spirits.  She will now no doubt soon become like her own dear self again & then let me congratulate you upon your being all [indecipherable] again, which as I recollect [indecipherable] your very good legs indeed.  As to the apparently very good prospects which your various farming operations held out where you [indecipherable].  There are so many slips between the cup & the lips within ventures
