where the Deer [indecipherable] in the season are abandoned and [indecipherable], but the weather has become very cold & damp & for the sake of my wife who is beginning to complain bitterly I must be off home now or next day for the South, in spite of the remonstrances of our wonderful kind host.  A frightfully destructive disease has broken out among the cattle of England & Scotland close akin I suspect to the particular form of [indecipherable] pneumonia you have had & I am afraid still have in the Colony.  Briton like the say of everyone has been, Oh! it has been introduced from the Continent.  It is the Russian Steppes disease, but to any impartial observer it is clearly an epidemic, a forerunner no doubt of the Cholera which we shall have among us in a few months without doubt.  You will see by the papers what frightful damages this pest is making in the Levant.  It has already passed from Egypt and Malta into Italy & France, so we may look out.  I do not think with our improved sanitary arrangements
