My dear Macarthur

A thousand thanks for your letter by the last mail and the kind & considerate way in which you impart the painful intelligence of my poor Brother's state.  I have just been writing to him, need I say after what I have learnt from you Roberts & others with very little hope indeed of my little cow [indecipherable] his eye.  Owing to our leaving London in a great hurry between the arrivals of the Southampton & Marseilles portions of the mail I have not yet received the letter which I hear from others poor William has written to me. I dread to open it, it will appear like a voice from the grave.

Sir William Macarthur
