the [indecipherable] has arrived. I feel much distressed about it. I always found him the most kind & respectable of men and a most devoted friend. Few men have been so formed by [indecipherable] with friends as he has been. I mean friends with him [indecipherable] of the time. [indecipherable] been spared to all but the three score years & ten myself. I have but [indecipherable] the whole of them. Indeed I have but two [indecipherable], you & Sir C. Nicholson. May you take [indecipherable]! Well this ought not to make one mourn. I ought to be one of the very gayest & happiest of mankind, for I certainly have been one of the most fortunate.
