serves to trespass on the spirit of the whole surroundings. If people only knew what there really was to see in England they would not hesitate a moment in paying it a visit. The whole place is saturated with history & this makes it so fascinating.

The old city of Salisbury - Old Sarum - was contained within the city wall which enclosed the Cathedral Close. A good bit of the wall & old gates still remain. The people living inside are under the Cathedral Close Council & look after their own roads & water supply etc - practically a city within a city. The gates close at 9 pm so I don't know how the people manage about theatres etc after that hour. Outside the wall is the new city or New Sarum & this contains a monument called Poultry Cross about as old as the city & the typical market square in front of the public buildings where all the business used to be carried on  & outside still remains a terraced hill the site of the old cathedral which is being gradually dug out. On this hill also was a fort & barracks but these have entirely disappeared now. To cap the day we had a fine supper & a party of five of us engaged a taxi home. It was a glorious ride through the
