for miles & this next forced march was pretty hot. We slipped & slid & splashed along eventually arriving at the dugout about 10 o'clock. One of our boys knocked up on the road & had to be left.

Fritz was pretty quiet & we arrived at our post without mishap, the last half mile being through a trench more often than not about six inches deep with soft mud & water. We splashed through this sometimes on floating duckboards, at times on boards unseen, hidden under the muddy water & at others slipping up to our knees in holes.

However we got there with squelshy feet, putties covered with mud up to our knee & wet through with perspiration. I might say before we left we were given twenty four hours' rations & the last half mile had to carry a stretcher each. (We always wear shorts now, have been for months)
