Letter No 1
12/5/16 At Sea.

Dear Mother,

At last we are well on our way. We arrived at the Agricultural Grounds very tired on Wednesday night & had almost two hours sleep. We left there at about 5 am & marched to the Boat accompanied by the Liverpool Camp band to the strains of "So Long Letty". Jean & her sister met us & marched to the boat with us but they would not allow anyone on to the warf [wharf] until we had cast off. It was not till then that we realised that we were going. A great crowd gathered to see us off but I forgot to get a photo. The boat must have looked well with the troops all over the rigging. All the morning people came out in launches to say good bye & supplied us with apples. I thought you were not coming. I got some good photos & if we call  in at Melbourne I will send the films along to Jean. Jack  told me that he heard you say that there were some magazines on board for me but I have not received them. Our quarters are right over the propellor but not too bad. What I can't get over is the excellence of the food - 3 course meals - butter jam & tinned fish - &
