Something aout the main st of the old city. It is narrow dirty & windy alive with ragged children & lined with dirty little dingy shops. What at a distance might be taken for bunting & decorations turns out to be clothes drying. Feeling important we booked accomodation in Princes St at a rather flash hotel, had dinner & took a run out to the Forth Bridge. Of its kind it is a wonder of the world - a triumph of engineering taking 5000 men seven years to build & costing several millions, 1 ½ miles long. Behind it shelters a great port  & our ships will be protected by nets & wires suspended from the bridge. The HMS Australia is there together with the Lion Tiger & Princess Royal etc & many kinds of mosquito craft.
