cold weather animals. On the 25 June we crossed the line but no demonstration was made for some reason given by the skipper. Since leaving Cape Town about 100 guards have been posted all over the decks as look-outs for subs etc. Lights on deck have been prohibited & the port holes pasted over.

29/6/16.
Arrived at Dakar today & spent my birthday there. We did not go ashore but one of the officers told us that the place was most uninteresting. Typically French as far as morality is concerned. The population is about 1200 whites & is practically only a French coaling base. The central place is a market place where all the natives collect to do business.  The few shops are kept by Syrians & all the whites are either naval or official personnages & the place is run by the English. As soon as we anchored we were surrounded by natives in boats who dived all day for pennies. The place is alive with fish & every boat had a good load aboard for which we exchanged ships bread. We bribed the cooks to cook them & had a good tea in honour of my birthday. The boys
