Larkhill Camp, Salisbury Plains
14/7/1916

Dear Mother & Dad,

You can imagine how glad we all were to get our first mail today. Everyone is happy & telling all his news to everyone else.   I got your letters Nos 1 & 2,  three from Jean, one from Elsa, one from Mrs Walken, one from Miss Davies and one from Bob Lasker, so you can imagine how pleased I was. I suppose you were very surprised to find that we did not go via Colombo & must compliment Dad upon his correct inference as to our  calling in at Melbourne but there will be no more underhand talk as my letters will not be censored - at least until I get to the front. Am very glad to hear that Jean is so well looked after by you in her trouble & that you are altogether.   9th  FA comforts Com. Of course all my previous letters will explain your false suppositions as to my whereabouts.  

Elsa's letter was short & sour but one which appealed to me but  I will deal with her in a separate letter. Its tone was quite typical of the character she is. I was quite shocked to
