of the convalsecent wounded which are greatly in evidence along the parade.

All along the beach too they have rows of little summer houses which one can hire by the day or week end. They are furnished & kept very clean even to having curtains on the windows and it looked great to see the occupants lounging about outside in big easy chairs having afternoon tea & entertaining the wounded.

The people also swim off the beach as far out as they like but there is no surf & the beach is nothing like ours, very narrow & of a dirty yellow colour, but we want a few of their piers to make our beaches.

Along the cliffs in this locality are big crevasses called "chines" which were used extensively in the olden days by smugglers. Today however they are all beautifully laid out & all along the tops are built magnificent residences of the rich - it is certainly an aristocratic pleasure resort. We took a car later & drove all along these parts winding in & out of sight along the tops of the cliffs which are still very thickly wooded. It is the number of trees about that makes these English mansions so beautiful.
