in the tinned line one could think of.   It all came from a deserted store & afterwards when I went up I visited the place & saw cases & cases of this stuff smashed & knocked about by shells & there were racks & racks of wines & champagnes, the floor inches deep in the stuff smashed by shells. It was terrible to see the destruction but the troops lived. The tinned stuff, especially the fish, was delicious and the jams perfection. The French are adept at conserves.

This was what we had for supper the other night - Tinned crab - asparagus - fried mushrooms (tinned) & coffee - all cooked on the primus. Some of the boys struck a bicycle shop & were racing up & down the streets on racing machines - one got tired & swapped his for a loaf of bread or a bottle of champagne. This has been a holiday. I wouldn't have missed the experience for anything.

Well to get back to the war. We were enjoying our stay at the A.D.S. when Fritz interferred. One morning just after breakfast Fritz started to shell. You have read something about
