have had & it turned me up a bit but today it has gone down considerably. The O.C. troops expressed his great appreciation of our behaviour & said we have set up an example hard to reach by those who follow & impossible to surpass. We also sent a letter of thanks to the Mayor for the great welcome & kindness extended by the people. Durban is a whaling station. They have a great fleet of whalers. The climate is much warmer & drier than Sydney. It is on the same meridian as Grafton in N.S.W.
We are going to call at Capetown for more coal & will get at least four hours leave. We then call at Dakar - the most western point of Africa - to pick up a gun & an escort & will probably land at Liverpool. We will probably camp at Salisbury Plains or Aldershot.
Remember me to everyone. I am having a grand time.
Your loving son
Verner
P.S. Tonight we pass the spot where the Birkenhead went down, the last post will be played & everyone will stand to attention.
We get to Capetown at 8 am tomorrow 8th & then 10 days to Dakar. We have travelled just on 6000 miles & have about 5000 more.
